As many of you have noticed (and have commented about to PBA), the rebuild of this intersection by GDOT was very poorly executed. It did not follow the Alliance’s traffic plan which the neighborhood, city and GDOT approved in the early 2000s (that’s how long this stuff takes!). PBA had agreed to a specific design with GDOT many years ago and that was not followed. With our City Council member Yolanda Adrean’s help, we had a meeting to try to resolve the issues and we received agreement from GDOT to fix the problems.
The main concerns were these: they built the islands incorrectly, did not provide for a left turn lane for westbound Peachtree Battle traffic, and installed a 100 foot long concrete median which is an eyesore and blocks a driveway to the synagogue. Our plan called for a 30 foot planted median island.
GDOT representatives agreed to add the westbound turn lane on Peachtree Battle and reconfigure the islands to allow for the turn lane. We asked if they could replace the concrete median on Northside Drive with the agreed upon 30 foot panted median. They did not agree, but they did agree to remove the 100 foot long concrete median.
It is not often that anyone can get GDOT to consider public input of any kind, much less correct errors in their construction. To have both occur is a great success for our neighborhood!
