The following statement is from Councilmember J.P. Matzigkeit:

 

This afternoon's shooting of a person attempting a carjacking at a Buckhead gas station (Powers Ferry at Roswell Road) is a consequence of the senseless car-related crimes that have plagued our neighborhoods recently. Atlanta Police will investigate and provide the details. At this point, according to police, a person who was attempting a carjacking was shot and wounded by a bystander.

 

According to Atlanta Police crime statistics, car thefts are up markedly this year in Zone 2, which covers Buckhead. Year-to-date, there have been 127 thefts as compared with 102 a year ago. Police have stepped up their presence to address this spike in crime, but there are steps we can take, as well. They include more officers in Zone 2 (something for which I have worked very hard), more security cameras and a heightened vigilance by all of us. I will continue to work on all of these things.
