Message from Our Council Member on Street Racing
Posted on Feb 24th, 2021

Councilmember Matzigkeit and the City Council passed multiple pieces of legislation combating street racing that include increased fines, requiring arrested street racers to see a judge before being eligible for release, and for organizers of street racing events to be eligible for arrest. Councilmember Matzigkeit also funds an off-duty APD officer to focus on street racing in District 8.  Recently, this officer made three arrests at a street racing event on Northside Parkway.

Many District 8 constituents ask how they can engage elected officials on the issue of street racing.  If you wish to engage state legislators, please see the information below.

The Georgia General Assembly has two pieces of legislation regarding street racing:

State Senate Bill 10 would enable further action against street racing, including requiring a special registration and license plate for high-performance vehicles (defined as having 650 Horse Power or more), increased fines, and action regarding impounding vehicles.

The legislation is in the Senate Judiciary Committee.  Below is a link to the legislation, as well as the emails for the Senators in the Senate Judiciary Committee, should you wish to contact them regarding the legislation.
