At the end of the nineteenth
century, George Washington Collier was the predominant landholder in the area from 15th Street to beyond Andrews Drive. At that time most of this
land was virgin forest and became known as “Collier Woods.”
Mr. Collier refused to sell his land while he was alive, and died in 1903.
After that, the land became available and the automobile was gaining in popularity.
In 1907 the streetcar was extended to Buckhead and ran along the ridge line known as Peachtree Road.
In 1908 the Atlanta City Limits were extended
to Palisades Road (Brookwood Hills)
and Peachtree was widened and paved to Buckhead. Summer estates were built in
the area, which then became popular year round.
Peachtree Heights
Park was developed and in the “Atlanta Journal”
on May 22, 1910 was described as “…a residence section excelled nowhere in its beauty and desirability.”
