ALLIANCE NOTES…News of Note to the Neighborhood
BATTLE CRY SURVEY 2009:
The Battle Cry, newsletter of the Peachtree Battle Alliance, has been a critical way for the PBA to inform neighbors of
important news items in our community. The PBA Board has had some difficulty recruiting a volunteer to edit the Battle
Cry. As a result, this will be the first Battle Cry since the fall issue.
Currently, the Battle Cry
is delivered to nearly 600 households within the neighborhood boundaries usually 3-4 times per year. The Board is trying
to determine whether or not it would be beneficial to provide an electronic version of the newsletter to our members and/or
whether neighbors would prefer timely emails with information instead of a newsletter. The cost of producing the Battle
Cry three times per year is $2,700. To hire an editor would add approximately $1,500 to the budget. We want to
ensure that we are providing timely, valuable information in the best medium for all of you. To assist in planning for future
distribution and content, please complete the enclosed survey. Thanks!
Clean Water Atlanta: Deanne Titus, Public Information
Manager, North America reports that contracts are nearing completion. When the paving schedule for the streets in Peachtree
Battle and the surrounding areas are determined, the Peachtree Battle Alliance will be informed.
Median
Park Improvements: Susan Dickerson has worked with various departments in the City for years to find a resolution
to the curbing and drainage issue along the median park at Woodward Way. With the assistance of Clair Muller, new curbing
was finally installed with repairs to the drain in November. Thanks for your persistence, Susan!
Around Peachtree Battle Race: Westover neighbors Vanessa and J.T. King organized the 6th annual
“Around Beachtree Battle” 5K Road Race on January 10, 2009, raising approximately $40,000 for the Atlanta Union
Mission’s women and children’s shelter. The 5K/3.1 mile event took place on a loop course through the Peachtree
Battle neighborhood with a total of 450 runners. Winners:

PEACHTREE CREEK GREENSPACE INITIATIVE UPDATE:
The Steering
Committee for the Peachtree Creek Greenspace Initiative would like to provide the neighborhood with an update on its activities.
As you probably know, the initiative involves acquiring the property at 473 Woodward Way for conversion to a pocket park for
the use of neighbors in the Peachtree Battle Alliance.
Georgia Trust for Public Land has been a strong partner
in our efforts and approached the property owner on our behalf in September, 2008. Based on extensive research by the
Steering Committee and the TPL, an offer was made for the property only, not the structure. This offer and the asking
price remain too far apart to continue further negotiations.
The property owner has a tentative offer from a developer
that might become available in the second quarter of 2009. The Steering Committee will remain in touch with the property
owner’s agent for status reports and will move forward if the property remains on the market, if it can be purchased
at below the asking price, and if economic conditions turn favorable for fundraising.
Thank you to all of the neighbors
who responded to our survey and offered support and advice along the way. We will continue to update you through e-mails
and your newsletter.
Haynes
Manor Garden Club: President, Kay Tritt, reports that the Club has completed its spring workday with the plantings
of annuals and general clean-up on the Dellwood and E. Rivers Islands on Peachtree Battle Avenue. Additionally, the
Club hosted its annual Holiday Auction in November and raised $2700, which has been donated to the Peachtree Battle Alliance
to support projects of the Parks Committee. Thanks HMGC!
Buckhead, A Place For All Time by Susan Kessler Barnard
has been reprinted. The new publisher is www.WWAOW.com, where it is now available via the Internet for $25.95.
It covers Buckhead history up to the early sixties in 316 pages, including over three-dozen historic pictures.
E. Rivers Elementary School
News and Calendar:
Congratulations to E. Rivers for receiving a “Platinum Award for Greatest Gains”
through Georgia’s Single Statewide Accountability System (SSAS) based upon student performance on the Spring 2008 CRCT
(Criterion Referenced Competency Test). Principal David White celebrates this award as evidence that E. Rivers is on a trajectory
to become one of the highest performing schools in Atlanta.
More good news from E. Rivers!
The Atlanta Public Schools is now providing funds for a City of Atlanta Policeman, daily, during the morning arrival and afternoon
dismissal hours at school. This is a great help with our neighborhood traffic control. Officer Green is a welcome
addition to our community.
